The VET Information Standard replaces the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard (AVETMISS) and represents a significant shift in how VET data is defined, collected and used.

Why it is changing
The Australian VET sector relies on consistent, high-quality data to make informed decisions, support learner outcomes and improve productivity across the workforce. The current AVETMISS framework has served the sector for decades, but the way training is delivered, funded and reported has evolved significantly.
VET Data Streamlining (VDS) is the national initiative driving this change. It is bringing together stakeholders across jurisdictions to modernise how VET data is collected, validated and shared.
1Single, modern national standard for VET data
2Streamlined reporting reduces administrative burden
3Better insight into outcomes and pathways
What is changing
The VET Information Standard introduces a refreshed data model, new reporting requirements, and modern technical interfaces. While many concepts will feel familiar, the structure, validation rules and submission process have all been updated to support a more streamlined and accurate national collection.
There are five key components in the new VET Information Standard, designed to work together as one connected system.
Data Model
Validation Rules
Reference Data
Submission API
Reporting Schedule
API-first architecture replaces flat-file uploads, with real-time validation feedback at submission.
Centrally maintained codes and lookups ensure every provider is reporting against the same source of truth.
Prepare for transition
Transitioning to the VET Information Standard takes coordinated effort across your data, technology, and reporting teams. Use the FAQs below for quick answers, and explore the detailed guidance in the dedicated transition area.
When does the new standard come into effect?+
The VET Information Standard rollout follows a staged transition through 2026 and 2027. Specific cut-over dates depend on your jurisdiction and Student Management System provider — full timing details are available in the transition guidance area.
Do I need to change my Student Management System?+
Most providers will continue to use their existing SMS, which will be updated by the vendor to support the new standard. Confirm your vendor's roadmap and certification timeline early.
What support is available during transition?+
NCVER, your state training authority, and your SMS vendor all provide guidance, training and helpdesk support. The Resources and support area lists every channel by topic.
Will historical AVETMISS data still be available?+
Yes. Historical collections remain accessible for reporting and research purposes, with mapping documentation provided to align legacy data to the new model.
